Split level apartment

This client came with the idea to have a split level which should be parallel to the longest wall. She very much wanted to have a round staircase. This would however cost too much space, especially with a long entry level. The top level would be very narrow too that way. That is why we turned it 90 degrees, which gave much more possibilities. Now too, the kitchen and living space are upstairs and the bedroom and bathroom, which does not need that much light are below.
Round stairs was what client spefically desired – so we made a plan using the rounding of the stairs to create a space in the middle: on the lower level the bathroom, and on the top level the kitchen. All drainage and water piping are together on one spot.
Since the windows are starting somewhere around the floor of the top level, the floor is only connected to the walls on the left wall and then trough the two iron pipes between the windows at the back. The floor is also resting on the round walls of the bathroom.
On the lower level in the dashed line one can see how the top level is covering the floor. The washing machine fits nicely under the stairs, the big sink on the wall can be used for washing yourself and the laundry.

My round house, the perfect balance between built and not-built, nature and technique: Yin-Yang is the solution. The contours of the house follow a circle. The part most remote from the entry is the smallest, towards the middle the building gets more dominant.

This cupboard is meant as part of a set to be used for cold buffets. The rest of the set follows thesame principle. The buffet cupboard is easy to assemble and can be used over a couple of days. Following use, it can be recycled. It is made of 0.4’’ (10 mm) thick corrugated cardboard and consists of three parts (the cupboard itself and two shelves)...

For on the way

This set is designed for three people who wish to consume a meal on the road, at a parking lot or in their car. The set is fit for both hot and cold meals and is compartimented. The lower plate has three boxes to be used with for example soup or yoghurt, the top plate can be used for preparing a sandwich. It also has an easy loop for cutlery and a separate box for the cup. The two plates (lower and top plate) are clicked on each other to form a stable construction. The cup has a lid (when it is closed, there is still a small opening so you can drink from it while driving). Three clicked together plates and cups can be stacked into a box. The boxes themselves are stackable as well.

See the images for the technical explanation and pictures of the model (made of paper-mâché).

This house (6 X 6 X 6 M), designed to house two people, can be constructed in a very short time. The assignement was to stay within the boundaries of the kube with the chance to expand in a single direction. Therefore, we chose to make a twist in the top floor and project a panel from glass - this together gives the direction for future expansion. In the planning, we used a wooden skeleton construction with sandwich panels as walls. On the ground floor they are covered on the outside with western red ceddar, at the top floor with aluminium.

This Construction drawing of an existing situation of a monument building in Leiden was made during an internship at the Architectural Firm of Reinier Verbeek in Leiden (August – December 1988). All details were drawn with high precision, extra attention was paid to the woodwork (wooden frames etc.). All drawings are made with MiniCAD (nowadays called Vectorworks).
See Images for the facades and enlargements of the detail.
