The house the customers inhabited was built in the 1970s and not much had been done about it since, so time for a change. The living room needed more light, another design of where to put what and also other colours. We also suggested a different flooring, including other orientation. The project was planned in cooperation with architect Frank Mulder. See Images for plan and drawings.

Below follows a short story...

Why the Haagse Kunstkring as location? The Denneweg has a strategic position towards the city centre, is easily reachable and is surrounded by 'artistic' activity. This function has a certain standing which has to do with 'taste' as well, with developing oneself and with the question 'what's beautiful'.

There will be little change on the outside: this is a protected city view. Just the space around the right three windows at the first floor, which is bordering with the showcase space, is painted in a different colour (derived from the adjacent houses to the right). The other colour matches the houses to the left.

I got the idea when I heard, a marina was planned in the canal of Zieken in the Hague. I would think it would be phantastic to offer people, with their own ship, to sleep for a short while in a real bed. This city after all is the perfect location for excursion throughout the Netherlands. Options exist, too, for people who like to remain on board to take a shower, wash clothes or grab a meal. Obviously, skippers are not the only welcome guests, if you visit The Hague by car, you can get an 'apartment' here as well.

Far and Away

Completed on:
April 1999

This project was made dor a design competition for a style rom by the Tong Tong Foundation. It took place in Spring 1999. "Far and Away" was described in the Jury report.

"the title of this design gives a good impression of the whole. The presentation is well cared for. Especially the choice of materials and their presentation is interesting. The designer clairly focussed on the Asian element of the design. The minimalism has been well incorporated. The system with elements which can be moved within the space is a good idea and adds to the minimalism in the space. The designer has limited herself well regarding use of shapes, colours and material, fitting with the theme. This has as well been applied to the elements she introduced. This creates a modest space."

The house is designed for the people working on the market, who like a cup of coffee and for toilet use. The outer area can be used by tourists on days when there is no market, just for sitting down and enjoying the view. The form of the house reminds of a bell-gable ...

Toilet cupboard

For Client:
Completed on:
February 1998

This little cupboard system is meant to hold toilet paper, sanitary pads et cetera. Three of the five compartments have a backing made of two flaps. This offers the chance to also leave small items in it without the danger to drop out on the back. Empty compartments can be folded away. Maximum five compartments can be used, minimum two. This cupboard has not only been planned but actually made in real besides a mini size dummy of the toilet with a hanging cupboard in it. See illustrations for more information (the pictures date back to 1998 and are therefore not all of high quality).
