9 - Wardrobe

For Client:
Completed on:
June 2001

This is part of my graduation project. This Personal Wardrobe is designed for the project Ne9en (nine): image consultant - dress advisor - personal shopper, which was based on the Enneagram.

This wardrobe can be used in different ways: as dress boy, in the hall or for example in the living room. The wardrobe exists of single loose elements, giving it countless different constellations. The design focusses on 9 different options - for 9 different people, based on the Enneagram.
The design of this wardrobe is executed (see photo below) including all elements. See as well Images for more explanation.

The characters of the Enneagram
can be divided in three groups:
belly centre (buikcentrum)
8 - THE PROTECTOR
9 - THE MEDIATOR
1 - THE PERFECTIONIST
heart centre (hartcentrum)
2 - THE GIVER
3 - THE PERFORMER
4 - THE TRAGIC ROMANTIC
head centre (hoofdcentrum)
5 - THE OBSERVER
6 - THE LOYAL SKEPTIC
7 - THE EPICURE

9 - THE PROTECTOR9 - THE PROTECTORTo the basic wardrobe, each time two elements are added. Depending to which of the three groups one fits with, this is either in the lower to boxes (belly centre), the middle two (heart centre) or the top two boxes (head centre). As the wardrobe has a bended profile, using the same elements each time create another appearance.

Another feedback to the Enneagram can for example be seen in the application of the steel shelf. This only occurs with THE MEDIATOR, THE PERFORMER and THE LOYAL SKEPTIC; these three have a special connection within the Enneagram diagram.

When designing, a translation was made towards plants. The characteristics of certain personalities could be found in plants (way of growing, company of other plants or appearance). From plants, the translation was made towards the final appearance of the wardrobe.

Technical details
The basic frame and loose elements (except the boxes) are made of the same material, being steel tubes (nickelled and welded together), the boxes are made of multiplex with varnish. notches are made. Depending on the location of the respective element, each time another notch is used to fix the position of the element.
The lighting serves as extra element, content-wise, of the wardrobe.
A selection was made of 9 different luminaries.

The image of the wardrobe is being determined
by the user and his/her clothing!
